چکیده
Although tests of liver function have been studied for many years, it is only recently that any intensive comparative studies have been made (1 to 3). Liver function studies are performed (a) to detect hepatic damage, (b) to aid in prognosis and assist in determining any surgical risk, (c) to differentiate obstructive from nonobstructive jaundice. The detection of hepatic damage is complicated by the large number of functional activities performed by the liver. As various functions of the liver will be affected to different degrees by a given type of damage, the results of a liver function test will depend upon which function is tested. Thus, while a given test is positive, others may be negative. This has led to the general concept of a dissociation of liver functions and liver function tests. Although tests of hepatic function are used on experimental animals, no experimental comparison has been made of the newer liver function tests. In this investigation, 5 liver function tests were studied in dogs receiving small doses of carbon tetrachloride, twice a week, to ascertain (a) the comparative sensitivity of the tests in detecting hepatic damage, (b) the constancy, or change in value, of a test as the doses of carbon tetrachloride were continued, (c) whether or not association or dissociation of the liver function tests was present.

Performance and Serum Hepatic Enzymes of Hy-Line W-36 Laying Hens Intoxicated with Dietary Carbon Tetrachloride
An experiment was conducted to study the effects of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) on post-peak performance and serum enzymes of Hy-Line W-36 laying hens from 32-36 weeks of age. The experiment was carried out with a total of 192 laying hens in a completely randomized block design. During the experiment laying hens were allocated to 4 groups consisted of T1) no CCl4 as control diet, T2, T3 and T4)...
متن کاملPotential Hepatoprotective Effect and Antioxidant Role of Methanol Extract of Oldenlandia Umbellata in Carbon Tetrachloride Induced Hepatotoxicity in Wistar Rats
The present work examines the protective mechanisms of methanol extract of Oldenlandia umbellata (MEOU) in carbon tetrachloride intoxicated rats. Rats were treated with carbon tetrachloride at the dose of 1 ml/kg body weight intraperitonially once in every 72 hrs for 16 days. The hepatoprotective activity of methanol extract of Oldenlandia umbellata was evaluated by measuring levels of serum ma...
متن کاملSingle-Sample Tests in the Differential Diagnosis of Jaundice.
Many attempts have been made to compare the usefulness of the various tests of liver function. The papers of White and others (1940), Wilson (1940), Higgins and others (1944), Maizels (1946), and Sherlock (1946) discuss the merits of such diverse estimations as bromsulphalein, hippuric acid, and urobilinogen excretion; bilirubin, cholesterol, cholesterol esters, differential proteins, fibrinoge...

The present study appraised the hepatoprotective activity of aqueous extract of Camellia sinensis leaves and its possible mechanism of action against carbon-tetrachloride-induced liver damage. Liver damage was induced by intraperitoneal administration of equal mixture of carbon tetrachloride and olive oil (50 % v/v, 0.5 ml/kg ) in male Wistar rats (150-220g) once daily for...
متن کاملHepatic Disorders in Renal Homograft Recipients*t
Renal homotransplantation was performed in 185 patients between March 1962 and April 1968. None of the recipients, who were aged 3 to 55 years, had known liver disease prior to transplantation, although in 39 of the earlier cases adequate biochemical tests were not obtained preoperatively to establish this fact. In the other 146, hepatic function was studied before operation and at frequent int...
